Component of GIS:
there are five components of GIS, they are

  1. Hardware 
  2. Software
  3. Data
  4. People
  5. Method
Hardware: It is the computer on which a GIS operates. Nowadays, GIS software runs on broad range of hardware, i.e from centralized computer server to desktop computer used in stand-alone or networked configuration.

Software: GIS software provides the functions and tools needed to store, analyze and display geographic information. some of the key software components are.

  • Tools for the input and manipulation of geographic information.
  • Tools that support geographic query,analysis and visualization.
  • A graphic user interface(GUI) for easy access to tools.
  • A database management system (DBMS).
Data: Data is the most important component of GIS. Geographic data and related tabular data can be collected in house or purchased from commercial data provider. A GIS will integrate spatial data with other data resources and can even uses data base management system (DBMS), used by most organization to organize and maintain there data to manage spatial data.

People: GIS technology is of limited value without the people that runs the system and develops plans for applying it to real world problems. GIS user ranges from technical specialists who design and maintain the system to those who use it to help them perform their everyday work.

Method: A successful GIS operates according to a well-designed plan and business rules, which are the model and operating practices unique to each organization.
