What is UPV test? Explain its process.
The UPV test basically
involves the measurement of velocity of electronic pulses passing through
concrete from a transmitting transducer to a receiving transducer. The test is
based on the principle that the velocity of sound in a solid material is a
function of the square root of the ratio of its modulus of elasticity to its
density. The density and elasticity properties are in turn related to the
quality and strength of the material. The pulse velocity ranges from 3 to 5
km/s and frequency ranges from 15-175 KHz.
An ultrasonic pulse
apparatus consist of a transmitter and a receiver which are held against two
faces pf concrete. The apparatus generate pulse of ultrasonic frequency which
are transmitted through concrete by the transmitter on the other face, the receiver,
receives them. The time of travel between initial and reception of the pulse is
measured electronically. Higher the velocity greater the strength of concrete.
