Corrosion is defined as the destructive and unintentional degradation of a material caused by its environment.A common type of corrosion is rust, which is found on iron and steel structures. In this type of corrosion, the iron is reacting with oxygen to form iron oxide compounds.
The prevention of corrosion are listed below
- Keep the concrete always dry so that there will be no water molecule (H2O) to form elasticity.also the aggressive agent cannot easily defuse into dry concrete.
- A polymer coating such as EPOXY is applied to concrete member to keep out the aggressive agents.
- Stainless steel should be used instead of conventional block bars.
- Blended cement can be the good replacement for OPC to reduce the corrosion on concrete.
- Admixture like Flyash using lowers the permeability which will delay the arrival of carbonation and chloride at the level of steel reinforcement.
- Electro chemical injection of the organic base corrosion inhibitors like ethanolamine and guanidine into carbonated concrete can reduce corrosion.
- As the cement content of concrete increase, more chloride reacts to form solid face so reducing cement content can lower down the rate of corrosion.
- Electro chemical extraction is relatively new technology for which long term service data are limited. this method employs a temporary anode that is operated at current density.
