Factor affecting water demand

Water demand is the assessment of total quantity of water required for a town or a city is known as water demand.To accomplish the water demand the water supply scheme should be designed to run efficiently for at least three further decades.


The factors affecting water demand are listed below:

  1. CLIMATIC FACTORS: The demand of water is more in summer and less in winter. The demand is more in a very hot day and it is less on a cloudy or rainy day.
  2. COST OF WATER: If the water tax is implemented by providing water meter, than the consumption of water will be less. The rate of tax also will effect the demand. Thus the higher the cost, the lower will be consumption.
  3. DISTRIBUTION PRESSURE: If the distribution pressure is very high, water consumption will be more.
  4. HABIT OF PEOPLE: Due to advance lifestyle, water consumption is very high in the high premises. The rate is average in middle class and the rate is low in slum area.
  5. INDUSTRY: Every industry requires much more water for operation and maintenance so the presence or absence of industry in a town affects rate of water demand.
  6. QUALITY OF WATER: The good quality of water increase the rate of demand where as the bad quality of water decrease the rate of demand.
  7. SEWAGE SYSTEM: The existence of sewage in a town or city increase the rate of water demand.
  8. SYSTEM OF SUPPLY: In a continuous system of supply, the consumption of water is more as there is every chance of miss use or wastage of water, so the rate of water demand is more.
